Choosing LED lighting room by room
Lumens, colour temperature and CRI matter more than watts. A short guide to lighting each space so it is comfortable, not just bright.

Think in lumens, not watts
Watts measure energy used; lumens measure light produced. A good LED gives 100–130 lumens per watt, so a 9 W bulb can match an old 60 W incandescent. Buying by watts alone is how rooms end up under-lit.
As a guide, a bedroom wants around 2,000–3,000 lumens total, a kitchen 4,000–5,000, spread across several fittings rather than one harsh source.
Colour temperature sets the mood
Warm white (2700–3000 K) is relaxing and suits bedrooms and living rooms. Neutral (4000 K) suits kitchens and bathrooms. Cool white (5700–6500 K) suits workshops, garages and task areas where alertness matters.
Mixing colour temperatures within one open space looks disjointed — pick one per area and stay with it.
Do not ignore CRI
Colour rendering index (CRI) describes how true colours look under the light. Below 80, skin and food look washed out; above 90 they look natural. For a kitchen, wardrobe or retail display, pay for high CRI.
