An APFC relay measures the incoming power factor and switches capacitor steps in and out to hold the target. It pays for itself out of the utility's PF penalty, usually inside two years.
If the site has VFDs, UPS or welding sets, specify detuned reactors. Plain capacitors on a harmonic-rich bus resonate, and the failure mode is a burst capacitor rather than a poor power factor.
Thyristor switching is worth the premium only where load steps are faster than a contactor can follow — press shops, spot welding, crane duty.
